This issue celebrates Australia Day with the release of three stamps featuring reproductions of paintings by three Australian artists; Fred Williams O.B.E. (1927-82) (85c, Landscape '74); Brett Whitely (1939-92) (90c, The Balcony); & Lloyd Rees A.C., C.M.G. (1895-1988) ($1.20 Fire Haze at Gerringong).   This release continues the practice by Australia Post of releasing stamps featuring paintings by Australian artists, this practice started in 1992.

Australian Legends 1

This issue celebrates the life and legend of Sir Donald Bradman for the first time awarded to a living Australian, the stamps were released in Se-tenant sheetlets of 10, the 45 cent stamps are a portrait of the "Don" and Sir Donald the legend in action at the crease, two stamps based on this theme were released in March, 2001 to celebrate the life of this man, the world's greatest cricketer.

Greetings Stamps

This issues theme is Greetings, with roses as the vehicle, released for St. Valentine's Day, the rose is the oldest known cultivated flower, it is believed that the practice of bestowing a red rose on one's object of affection started in France during the 18th century when King Louis XVI gave Antoinette red roses on 14 February as a token of his love, although it was supposedly Cleopatra and Mark Anthony that waded through 45 centimetres of roses that Cleopatra had arranged to welcome her love.

This issue of Counter Printed stamps were produced at the Hong Kong '97, the 11th Asian International Exhibition, Hong Kong.  This issues designs are basically the same as Series 6, Part 2, but the stamps are longer with any value from 45c to $100 available & the identifying post office/Exhibition printed on the stamp.
There have been a number of Counter Printed stamps in this design, starting at Series 7; Series 7, parts 1 through 7, issued during 1994;Series 8, parts 1 through 6, issued during 1995; Series 9, part 1, issued June, 1996; Series 10, parts 1 through 6, issued during 1997; Series 11, parts 1 through 4, issued during 1998; Series 12, parts 1 through 7, issued during 1999; Series 13, parts 1 & 2, issued during 2000; Series 14, parts 1 through 4, issued during 2001; Series 15, parts 1 through 3, issued during 2002; Series 16, parts 1 through 5, issued during 2003; Series 17, parts 1 through 7, issued during 2004; Series 18, parts 1 through 3, issued during 2005; Series 19, parts 1 & 2, issued during 2006 & Series 20, issued during 2007, (I am not aware of any at present); Series 21, issued during 2008, (I am not aware of any at present); Series 22, parts 1 & 2, issued during 2009; Series 23, parts 1 through 5, issued during 2010; Series 24, during 2011, (I am not aware of any at present); Series 25, part 1, issued March 2012.

Australia's Classic Cars
Part 1, Lick & Stick

This issue highlights some of Australia's classic cars, the 1934 Ford Coupe Utility was the first ute, and was designed in Geelong; the 1948 General Motors Holden 48-215 (referred to as the FX); 1958 Austin Lancer; 1962 Chrysler Valiant R series, they were released as individual stamps (in a Se-tenant page) and in a prestige booklet.   Cars in Australia were accepted very early with the Governor of Victoria being driven around Melbourne's Exhibition Gardens in a car built by the Australian Horesless Carriage Company in February 1897.

Issue 2
Wetlands

This release is Issue 2 of Nature Australia, the wetlands of Kakadu National Park comprise some 4000 square kilometers of wetlands, with everything from coastal swamps, tidal flats, floodplains and waterfalls, there are four stamps in this release, the 20c, Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is one of two species of crocodile found in the Kakadu wetlands; the 25c, Northern Dwarf Tree-frog (Litoria bicolor); the $1, Big Greasy Butterfly (Cressida cressida) commonly found in the tropical wetlands; and the $10, Kakadu Wetlands, a Miniature Sheet was also released featuring the $10 stamp, it was overprinted three times that I am aware of, PACIFIC '97, San Francisco, 29 May to 8 June, 1997 (OP1); & ITALIA '98, Milan, Italy, 23 October to 1 November, 1998 (OP2) & PHILANIPPON '01, August 2001 (OP3), all listed below.

Queen's Birthday

This issue celebrates Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's 71st Birthday, the design is a stamp on stamp type, featuring a 1d stamp first released to commemorate Princess Elizabeth's wedding to Prince Phillip,
in
November, 1947; there was also a second release August, 1948.   The practice of celebrating our sovereign's birthday began when Governor Phillip proclaimed a holiday to honour the birthday of King George III, the Queen's birthday is celebrated officially in June (October in Western Australia) although her real birth date is 21 April.   1997 marks the 50th anniversary of the wedding of Her Royal Highness.  
Australia Post has been issuing a Queen's Birthday stamp since 1980.

Merino Sheep

This issue celebrates the introduction of Merino sheep to Australia, the Macarthur family were instrumental in introducing Merino sheep (originally bred in Spain) to Australia, they first purchased Merino stock raised in South Africa in 1796, the issue also highlights an innovation Merino wool has been used in, the design of the George Peppin stamp derived from Peppin Heritage Centre & the design of 'Pepe' chair stamp by MAP, the Pure New Wool logo used on the stamp designed by IWS.

The Dreaming

This issues stamps are images from four animations from The Dreaming series: Dumbi the owl, based on a story by David Mowaljarlai of the Hibiscus people, originally from the Prince Regent River area in north Western Australia; The Two Willy-Willies, a story told by Josie Boyle from the desert people of the Wongi tribe; How Brolga Became a Bird, told by Pauline McLeod, a story from the Mutti Mutti people of Lake Mungo, NSW; and Tuggan Tuggan (Silky Oak), a story told by Oodgeroo Noonuccal from Stradbroke Island.  This issue was also an Australian first as it was printed using Hexachrome ink (six colours) & stochastic screening.

This issue focuses on a number of Australian Creatures of the Night, the Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus); the Brown Antechinus (Antechinus stuartii); the Dingo (Canis lupus dingo); the Barking Owl (Ninox connivens); the Spotted-tail Quoll (Dasyurus maculatus) & the Yellow-bellied Glider (Petaurus australis), the first three were released in Se-tenant form, the next two in a Se-tenant pair, this pair was also released in Peel & Stick, & all 6 were released in a Miniature Sheet with a different perforation.   A number of other 'creatures' are also listed although not on the stamps, but on the miniature sheet namely the Marbled Velvet Gecko (Oedura marmorata); the Diamond Python (Morelia spolota spilota), the Huntsman Spider and a number of flying bats.
