2001 Issues

Centenary of Federation
Part 1, Lick & Stick

This issue continues the Toward Federation Series begun in May 2000, it is also the First Federation issue, Federation was debated for over twenty years, the British Parliament passed the legislation on 5July, 1900, that enabled Australia to become a Federation.  On 1 January, 1901 the six colonies (New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia & Tasmania) became the Commonwealth of Australia.  There are four designs in this release 2 x 49c & 2 x $2 stamps, the first 49c stamp is the 'Federation Arch', the image is of the inauguration parade passing through the Wheat Arch and down Bridge Street in Sydney (images from the Image Library, State Library of N.S.W.), the second 49c stamp is 'Edmund Barton', he was Australia's first Prime Minister and later became Sir Edmund Barton, the image is of him taking the oath in the pavilion of Centennial Park, the background image shows the pavilion & crowds of the day (all images from the National Library of Australia), the first stamp 'National Celebrations', which shows detail from the official programme covers (from the Image Library, State Library of N.S.W.), the words 'Australia Forever' come from a song written at the time (National Archives of Australia), the photograph shows a picnic group at Bunter Creek, above Whipstick Station, Whitecliffs, N.S.W., held on 1 January, 1901 (from the Image Library, State Library of N.S.W.), the second stamp is 'State Banquet' and shows the invitation cover for the State Banquet held in Sydney Town Hall, the background image shows a photograph of the banquet itself (cover image from the Image Library, State Library of N.S.W., with the background photograph supplied from the National Library of Australia).

Each year an issue is made of Australian Legends, this issue a living legend of the time, Slim Dusty, he was born David Gordon Kirkpatrick in Kempsey, N.S.W. in 1927, he adopted the name Slim Dusty as a 10 year old, inspired by the likes of Henry Lawson & Banjo Paterson he soon became a an Australian performer of note with "When the Rain Tumbles Down in July" in 1946, that hit established Australian Country music in a genre of it's own, he came to National prominence with the hit "The Pub With No Beer" in 1957, he received an M.B.E., then in 1998 an A.O., in 1992 he helped form the Country Music Association of Australia and was chairman until recently, in 1998 he was named one of 100 National Living Treasures by the National Trust of Australia, in 1999 he was named 'Father of the Year and Senior Australian of the Year', he sang 'Waltzing Matilda' at the close of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, consider, Slim Dusty is Australia's best selling domestic artist, he has won more gold & platinum record awards than any other Australian performer.
There are two 45c stamps in this issue the first Slim in 1957, the second Slim in 2001, a sheetlet of 10 (5 of each stamp) with his signature at the bottom was also released.
Sadly Slim passed from this world on 19 September, 2003 aged 76 years.

Army - 100 years of Service

This issue recognises a century since the formation of the Australian Army with the release of two 45c stamps, on 1 January, 1901 after the Commonwealth of Australia was proclaimed, the new constitution gave the Commonwealth shared powers with the States in post, telegraph and exclusive power in defence, customs, currency and Federal Territories, Major General Sir Edward 'Curly' Hutton became the head of the Australian Commonwealth Forces. The A.I.F. (Australian Imperial Force) was formed in 1914, in the years following WWII, Australia developed its first regular army (supplemented by the C.M.F. (Citizen Military Force).  The two 45c stamp designs illustrate the Army's historical and contemporary roles and the nature of its service over a century, the first is from WWII, the main image a photograph by Norman Brown of the forward command post of the 29th/46th Battalion in New Guinea in 1943, show are signalman Charles Byrne & G. Walker, the smaller image is of the Light Horse brigade in 1940; the second stamps main image is a photograph by George Gittoes of Trooper Jon Church carrying a child in Rwanda (1995), this trooper was killed in an accident in Townsville in 1996, when a Black Hawk went down, the smaller image is officers of the Commando Officer Selection course July, 1997 at Marangaroo Barracks, Lithgow, N.S.W, the two stamps below (1618 and 1619) were reproduced on 21 April, 2005 as a sheetlet being a part of the Australia and War Prestige Booklet issue (page 9).

This issue is the Second Federation issue, the opening of the National Museum of Australia is a part of the celebrations marking a century since Federation.  The designs are a combination of the museum's architectural features, the entry canopy, skylights, and an architectural site plan, with the Wallaby sculpture; Pangk (1962, George MacNaught & Joe Ngallametta, Wik people of Western Cape York Peninsula, comprising, wood, ochre, nails & resin, they were released as a Se-tenant pair.

This issue commemorates 100 years since the opening of the First Federal Parliament (1901 - 2001), it is also the Third Federation issue, after the Federation of the Australian colonies on 1 January, 1901, elections were held on 29 & 30 March.  The first Federal Parliament opened on 9 May, 1901, the ceremony was held at the Melbourne Royal Exhibition Building (the only building big enough at the time to hold between twelve & fifteen thousand people), the official guests were the Duke & Duchess of Cornwell and York (who later became King George V & Queen Mary), the two designs are: 45c Silver, the top half reproduces Charles Nuttall's painting of the time 'The Opening of the First Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia by HRH The Duke of Cornwell and York (Later King George V), May 9, 1901; $2.45 Gold, the top half reproduces Tom Roberts' official pictorial record of the occasion depicted from an imaginary vantage point in the Exhibition Building's eastern transept.

This is Issue 2, Part 1 of International Post, issue 1 was released 24 April, (20 issues up), these four stamps extend and enhance the International stamp range, the first three replace the Great South Land issue (July, 2000), the last stamp the $20 Uluru, completes the definitive range (as a large denomination stamp for International post was required), these stamps highlight the unique natural beauty of the Australian continent.   The four stamps are: 50c The Three Sisters, Blue Mountains, NSW, located within the Blue Mountains Park region (listed as a World Heritage site in 2000), 132 plants from this site are found no where else in the world; $1 Murrumbidgee River, ACT, one of Australia's major rivers flowing some 1600klms from Kosciusko National Park to the Murray River near Balranald, NSW, passing through the ACT; $1.50 Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas, QLD, Port Douglas is located 70klms north of Cairns, the closest coastal town to the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree National Park is just north of the town as well; $20 Uluru, NT, This monolithic sandstone rock was once know as Ayers Rock in 1985 the park was handed back to the traditional owners, the Anangu people, the rock is 348m high and 9.4klms around the base, Uluru is located within the Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park, 335klms south-west of Alice Springs and is the largest exposed rock in the world.

This issue (a joint issue with Sweden), highlights Swedish born Karl Daniel Solander (1733 - 1782), a botanist & adventurer, he accompanied Joseph Banks on Cook's first pacific voyage to New Holland (Australia) between 1768 & 1771, the 45c stamp features Solander based on a portrait attributed to William Perry ARA (supplied by Linnean Society of London) and on a watercolour illustration of a Barringtonia calyptrata (based on sletches by Sydney Parkinson, Endeavour illustrator, (courtesy of the natural History Museum, London); the $1.50 stamp features a watercolour illustration of Cochlospermum gillivraei (also based on sketches by Sydney Parkinson,  courtesy of the Natural History Museum, London), & a Sydney Parkinson drawing of the Endeavour caught on the reef near Endeavour River, north Queensland (courtesy of the University of Melbourne Archives).
